Joseph D'Asté (1881 - 1945)

Joseph d’Asté (1881–1945) was a sculptor of Italian origin, born in Naples as Giuseppe D’Aste. He settled in Paris around 1900, adopted the first name Joseph, and exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1905 onwards.

His body of work consists mainly of sculptural groups in bronze or régul, depicting children, scenes of peasant life, animals and rural subjects. His style, which is both naturalistic and full of tenderness, reflects a marked preference for scenes of everyday life and the innocence of childhood. His compositions captivate the viewer with their movement, their attention to detail and their superb craftsmanship.

Joseph d’Asté enjoyed considerable success during the first half of the 20th century. His works were produced in multiple editions by major art foundries and are now held in numerous public and private collections. Our sculpture is held at the Musée d’Orsay, a testament to the recognition his work has received. He remained active until the mid-1930s and passed away in 1945.
