André Strauss ( - )

A pupil of Ernest Laurent, André Strauss made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1908. He won a gold medal and the Corot Prize in 1925, quickly establishing his place in the French art scene between the two world wars.

A founding member of the Salon des Tuileries, he also exhibited regularly at the Salon d'Automne, becoming a member in 1930. His career took on an international dimension through his participation in several group exhibitions, notably at the Venice Biennale, as well as in Copenhagen, Berlin, Cairo, Tokyo, New York, Brussels and San Francisco.

Strauss also created important public decorations, including the decorative panels in the reception hall of the town hall in Perros-Guirec.

Primarily a landscape painter, he remained committed to a sensitive naturalism, favouring careful observation of light and atmospheric variations. Recognised by his peers and institutions, he was appointed Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1937.
