Prosper Saint-Germain ( - )

A French draughtsman, painter and engraver, Prosper Saint-Germain had close ties with Brittany, where he lived in Morlaix during the 1830s. A friend of the writer Émile Souvestre, he illustrated several of his works and specialised in depicting Breton landscapes, costumes and scenes of daily life. His lithographs, published in numerous albums and magazines, played a major role in popularising the picturesque image of Brittany in the 19th century. Appointed professor of drawing at the Naval Academy in Brest in 1851, he left behind a prolific body of graphic work, now held in particular at the Musée départemental breton in Quimper and the Musée des Jacobins in Morlaix.
