Couple of salt workers in shells
Couple of salt workers from the Bourg de Batz-sur-mer, under a globe. Made of shells. End of the XIXth century.
Small rarity... Popular art object, made in Batz-sur-mer from the beginning of the XIXth century, representing salt workers in formal wear. It seems that the shell craft, which began in Batz-sur-Mer at the end of the 17th century, for the production of bouquets to decorate church altars, found another way around 1820 in the manufacture of shell figurines in the effigy of the salt workers, thus spreading their images and their popular traditions outside their region... A moving testimony of the past, marked by great delicacy.
